The present and the sustainable future of Tonelería Murúa
At the Murua Group we are committed to sustainability, energy efficiency and respect for the environment.
As part of our company DNA, we consider it essential to ensure that forest management is sustainable, as this is the only way to guarantee the future of the raw material. This is why we demand full compliance with current environmental regulations from all our suppliers.
Part of the wood waste generated during the manufacture of barrels is used in our biomass boiler which transforms the wood into heat energy, thus reducing our carbon footprint and avoiding the emission of 100,000 kg of CO2 into the atmosphere per year.
This energy not only maintains the temperature of our factory through underfloor heating, but also allows us to heat the pool of water in which we immerse the barrels. This technology has enabled us to stop using all diesel.
The barrel recovery line closes the circle of barrel sustainability by allowing used barrels to be given a new life after the first few years of wine ageing.
All the barrels have their own DNA identification label, which not only codes the wood from which they were made but also the production process. This unique label per barrel allows us to have knowledge of the barrels in the winery. This total traceability is a further step in the chain of custody and environmental PEFT commitment against climate change.
We have control of energy consumption points through a digital energy submetering project, where we measure the different consumption centres and send the data to a cloud platform to analyse them and improve the efficiency of each of the processes.
New Cooperage built with maximum energy efficiency. Walls, windows and ceilings are made with a higher insulation than required by environmental standards, which allows energy savings and greater comfort for its operators both in winter and summer.
Our aim is ZERO WASTE, i.e. to ensure that the waste from our own business can be reused and have a second life.
All the waste generated: plastic, cardboard and scrap metal are managed through recycling companies that put this material back into circulation.
We reuse all the wood sawdust generated to generate our own heat energy and as raw material for other industries.
The wood drying yard of the Murua Cooperage can be considered a unique small ecosystem where insects, reptiles, birds and small mammals live and reproduce, contributing to the biodiversity of the area.
These insects favour the pollination of nearby vegetation and help to maintain the flora.
The 282 solar panels for self-consumption make the company self-sufficient in a high percentage of its energy consumption.
In this way we reduce emissions by approximately 60 tons of CO2 per year. It also allows us to reduce our electricity consumption by 30% per year.
