The origin, from 1898
1898
In 1898, Justo Murúa founded one of the first cooperage industries in Europe. Tonelería Mecánica Riojana –Tonelería Murúa– is the culmination of a dream forged in the knowledge acquired with the French master cooper Jean Pineau, and his experience as a cooper in the Marqués de Riscal winery.
1920
The cooperage, located in Logroño, incorporates modern machinery, leaving behind an artisan way of manufacturing. This great step makes Don Justo a visionary in the way of understanding this business and the recognition of the entire wine sector.
1925
Visit of King Alfonso XIII to Tonelería Murúa
1989
It was Donato Murúa, his son, who went one step further, achieving international recognition, as well as counting among his clients the most prestigious Rioja wineries.
After Donato’s death, his wife, Pilar Revuelta, decided to take over the business and continue the founder’s dream, supported by the whole family.
2009
In 2009 Elena Ceca Anton, the fourth generation, took over the management of the cooperage, remaining faithful to the values that have shaped the historic character of this cooperage: always one step ahead in the pursuit of excellence, pampering quality and providing the best service to its customers.
2020
In 2020 we built our new facilities in Navarrete, a cooperage with state-of-the-art machinery and energy-efficient construction. Thanks to this new cooperage we have been able to provide more services to our customers all over the world and expand our barrel catalogue.
We maintain the artisan principles instilled in us by previous generations and, with love and respect, we keep the collection of utensils and tools that our master coopers used to make barrels at the beginning of the 19th century.
You can visit the unique collection of cooperage tools in our modern facilities in La Rioja.
