The mission of Tonelería Murúa is to collaborate with the wineries in the ageing of their wines, providing high quality barrels made to measure for the wineries, giving continuity to the trust placed in us since 1898.

No two wines are the same, which is why it is important that the barrels are specific for each type of wine, for which the oenologist-barrel maker dialogue is fundamental. But this system of work requires the development of an organisation that speeds up the production of the barrels.

In the production area, Tonelería Murúa has implemented a modern and competitive process that organises the resources to achieve the perfect product in the established times and with the appropriate means. Quality in terms of time and deadlines, which improves and speeds up the production of barrels.

This management innovation project is important in order to offer the customer a barrel without defects, on time and at the required cost.

Full traceability - SMART BARREL

We transparently transmit to the customer all the stages of the process that each barrel goes through by means of a DNA label that is unique to each barrel.

Each log is marked in the forest with a batch of wood, this log is identified on the pallets of boards generated by that log.

The DNA label accompanies the entire barrel manufacturing process and data is incorporated into the label.

Each barrel incorporates all its unique identification data.

Chain of custody

We have been PEFC certified since 2017.

PEFC certification indicates that the oak logs have been managed according to the strictest environmental, social and economic requirements.

The aim of this certification is to promote sustainable forest management in forests that is carried out in an economically viable, socially beneficial and environmentally responsible manner, in accordance with established standards.

Social and training commitment

Tonelería Murua is committed to offering employment opportunities to people with different abilities. We have been collaborating for years with Asprodema and other associations in social integration to offer training opportunities and job development.

We collaborate with NGOs by distributing part of the company’s profits to: Ayuda en Acción, Médicos sin fronteras and ACNUR.

In-house training

Our coopers learn the technique of making barrels as an art, and for five years the apprentices are taught by the master coopers who will teach them until they learn the craft of coopers.

External training

Our management team is in continuous training to keep up to date with all the regulations and new business practices, thanks to management courses held in different business centres.

Training for oenologists

We organise meetings to disseminate techniques and knowledge about ageing wine in wood and training for future oenologists. Since 2005 we have been collaborating with the University of La Rioja in the training of oenologists, oenologists’ associations and Masters in wine.

Circular economy, the second life of your barrels

At the Murua Group we are committed to recovering all natural resources, which is why we have created a line for recovering used barrels to give them a new lease of life through bluing, retosting and sanding. With this treatment, the barrels can continue to be used in distillates.
